Anna and I recently started a (budding) organization called KY-PATH (Kentucky Passenger Advocating for Trains Here), which is focused on advocating for the reinstatement and development of passenger rail in central Kentucky. As you know, Kentucky is a state that heavily relies on cars for transportation; however, there is a real need for more sustainable and efficient forms of transportation. While walking and biking infrastructure encourages less car dependency for short term travel, it does not relieve the need for a car for intercity transport. Trains add an additional option for Kentuckians and visitors alike. It's an additional layer of resiliency to diversify KY transportation. Our proposed path, using existing rail that has previously had passenger rail but is currently used as exclusively freight lines, roughly parallels I-75, connecting Cincinnati and Knoxville through Lexington, and, of course, Berea. By advocating for increased investment in rail infrastructure and policies that support passenger rail, we hope to create a more vibrant and connected region.
